"Siliziwe didn't just save me — they taught me that I am worthy. My children see a strong mother."
Background: Trapped in Violence
Thandi (name changed for privacy), a 34-year-old mother of two from Atlantis, endured eight years of physical and emotional abuse. Alcohol-fueled violence nearly took her life. She felt trapped — with no independent income, limited family support, and a deep sense of shame that kept her silent.
Studies consistently show that survivors often have fewer resources to escape abusive situations. In South Africa, where 40% of men have admitted to beating their partners, many women feel forced to justify violent behaviors as temporary lapses.
The Crisis: A Turning Point
After a brutal assault that left her with a broken arm and her children terrified, Thandi fled to a neighbor who connected her to Siliziwe Community Care Center. She arrived at our doors with nothing but fear and the clothes on her back.
Intervention & Shelter
At Siliziwe, Thandi and her children received a safe, warm room, nutritious meals, and immediate medical care. Our social worker provided trauma counseling while our legal team helped her obtain a protection order, securing her legal safety for the first time in years.
We believe in a holistic approach, providing a loving environment that fosters emotional healing alongside physical security.
Skills Development & Empowerment
Thandi enrolled in our beadwork and cooking programs. She also mastered vegetable gardening, cultivating spinach and tomatoes in our shelter garden. Selling surplus produce at local markets provided Thandi with her first-ever independent income, breaking the chains of financial dependency.
Recovery & Reintegration
After four months, Thandi transitioned into a small rental home. We continue to support her through follow-up visits and support groups. Today, Thandi has come full circle, serving as a mentor to new survivors entering our care.
Today: A New Life
Today, Thandi runs a successful small catering business and is a vocal advocate against GBV in Atlantis. Her children are thriving in school. Her journey is proof that with shelter, skills, and support, survivors can truly thrive.
Stories like Thandi's happen every day. Your contribution helps us provide the safe haven and skills necessary for the next journey of healing.
