About Siliziwe Community Care Center

Rooted in community, driven by hope — standing against gender-based violence since 2024

Our Background & Story

Siliziwe Community Care Center is a community initiative founded by members of Witsand Community who seek to work with abused women and children regardless of race, religious beliefs, and family background. Our organization takes a holistic approach to the challenges faced by abused women and children in Atlantis and surrounding areas within the City of Cape Town.

We all know that despite everyday awareness campaigns against gender-based violence, South Africa still has the highest number of cases of violence against women and children in the world. On average, there is a new case every six hours. However, violence against women and children is not part of African culture but the result of degradation due to poverty, abuse of alcohol and other drugs, and lack of public services and infrastructure.

In South Africa, 40% of men have beaten their partners and one in four has committed sexual crimes. Even if only 2% leads to charges being laid, violence against women and children is a growing phenomenon.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide a temporary Shelter as a safe space to abused women and children when they are extremely vulnerable because we know that this time is an absolute critical point of crisis intervention. Our Shelter will serve as a temporary home where victims of GBV will receive counseling, love, care, and also be provided with information on their legal rights and how to access the legal system and other available services effectively by our multidisciplinary team.

Our Vision

To actively involve women, older persons, children, youth and families in all stages of intervention process. To provide income generating skills to the victims through our various skills training programs as part of empowering them. To add value to the lives of so many abused women and children as we improve their capacity to become effective citizens within their community and the country at large.

The Challenges We Address

Alcohol & Substance Abuse

67% of men had consumed alcohol before abusing their partners. Alcohol abuse is a major risk factor for GBV.

Poverty & Economic Stress

Unemployment and economic stress influence gender-based violence in townships.

Patriarchal Attitudes

Deeply entrenched patriarchal attitudes towards women make violence an almost accepted social phenomenon.

Teenage Pregnancy

Increase in teenage mothers dropping out of school, putting them at high risk of GBV.
